This spring engagement session at Square Cat Vinyl in Indianapolis was a reminder that the best photos happen when couples choose a place that actually feels like them. Instead of a park or garden, they wanted something personal. A place they’d hang out on a normal Saturday. So we landed at a vinyl record store. Honestly, it was perfect.

Square Cat Vinyl is such a fun spot for engagement photos in Indianapolis. The retro feel, the rows of records, the cafe tucked inside, it all has so much character. We checked in with the owners before shooting and they were completely on board as long as we stayed respectful of other customers. Easy enough.

They kicked things off with drinks from the cafe and eased into the session by flipping through records. No stiff posing, no awkward what do I do with my hands energy. They listened to Phil Collins, one of their favorite artists, laughed a lot and played a few arcade games tucked in the back. It felt relaxed and very them which is always the goal.

I leaned into the vintage feel of the space with my editing and went heavier on a film inspired look. Grain, muted tones and softer colors helped bring out that retro record store vibe without feeling overdone. It matched the space and the mood of the session perfectly.

We wrapped things up outside and walked along the street for some candid moments. Just the two of them hanging out, talking, laughing and forgetting there was even a camera around.

If you’re looking for an engagement photographer in Indianapolis and want photos that feel personal and true to who you are, don’t be afraid to think outside the box. Coffee shops, record stores, bars, bookstores, places you actually love. Square Cat Vinyl is proof that engagement sessions don’t have to look one way to be meaningful.
