This wedding took place at The Barn in Zionsville Indiana and I’m sharing it entirely in black and white. I like to do that from time to time, because black and white has a special place in my heart and it feels weird to lump black and white images together with color.
I was really excited to shoot at The Barn. It sits in the countryside just outside of Zionsville and was once home to more than twenty horses over the years before being transformed into a wedding venue. That history still shows. Wood, open air space, and a layout that invites people to gather and stay awhile.
The barn itself is beautiful. Concrete floors, tall ceilings, chandeliers hanging overhead, soft draping that moves with the breeze, and warm lighting that wraps around everything. The open air design keeps things comfortable and relaxed and makes the whole evening feel connected to the outdoors.
This couple were easy going and fully present with each other and their people. Black and white photography works so well for days like this. It strips everything down to emotion and movement. Smiles, laughter, hands held a little tighter. Without color competing for attention, those moments stand on their own.
Black and white wedding photos hit hard because they feel timeless. They don’t age the same way color can. You notice expressions first. The way people interact. The energy of the room. For me, black and white is about storytelling in its simplest form.
I always deliver a mix of color and black and white images for my weddings. Certain moments naturally belong in black and white and I make sure to include some black and white and of course the color version, too. If couples ever want more black and white photos, they can always ask. I’m happy to provide them. It’s something I truly love creating.
This wedding at The Barn in Zionsville was a perfect fit for this approach. Open air, strong textures, real emotion, and a celebration that felt warm from start to finish. As an Indianapolis wedding photographer, days like this are why black and white will always have a place in how I tell wedding stories.
